Starting south of the Third Ring Road and extending almost to the Fifth, this vast area in the north-west is the academic and technological part of town. With dozens of universities, including China's top two: Peking University and Tsinghua University, this area is home to thousands of Chinese and foreign students. Aside from cheap rent for most apartments, schools and hip cafes and hangouts, there's a lot of historical ground to cover, and it's all accessible on the Line 13 light rail and subway Line 4.

This area has seen rapid development in recent years, with most of the hutongs knocked down to make way for apartment blocks. More and more foreigners are moving to the area to be close to what's dubbed the Silicon Valley of Beijing. Tsinghua Science Park, just west of the light rail station, is home to Google's office and many other IT industries.

If you need anything related to computers, just go to visit the Zhongguancun Electronics City. In the north of Peking University, is the Old Summer Palace, and Yuanmingyuan Remains Park. Fragrant Hill, a peaceful mountain that takes about two hours to hike up but provides breathtaking views and fresh air, is also nearby.
